Des Moines Register’s Iowa High School Rankings, Week 9

0

There haven’t been many changes to the Des Moines Register’s high school football rankings after Week 8, but we have a new No.1 team entering Week 9.

West Marshall, now 7-1 after beating Albia, 53-8, is the new top-ranked team in Class 2A. They took over after losing Southeast Valley, which had been our No.1 team in 2A for the past three weeks, to Spirit Lake, 21-14.

That may not mean much. West Marshall is the fifth team to take first place in Class 2A this season. No class has seen so much turnover at the top of the poll.

Three different teams were No.1 in 5A and 8 player classes, and our No.1 preseason teams in 4A, 3A, 1A and A classes – North Scott, Harlan, Van Meter, West Hancock, respectively – have all been held serve for eight weeks.

Classes 5A, 4A and 3A all have an extra week in the regular season, while 2A, 1A, A and 8-Player all start their playoffs this Friday. The 40 ranked teams were separated in their respective first round clashes, which were released on Saturday morning by the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

After next week, we will only redo the rankings for classes 5A, 4A and 3A. The 2A, 1A, A and 8 player polls below will be held until the end of the playoffs.
