The Hamilton Catholic School Board has launched a fundraiser in support of Ukraine and plans to hold a day of prayer for peace in the war-torn country later this week.

The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) announced Tuesday, March 8, that it will hold a day of prayer for peace for Ukraine this Thursday.

In addition, the board said a system-wide support for Ukraine campaign has been launched to raise funds for humanitarian aid to those affected by the invasion.

The Russian assault on Ukraine, which was launched in late February, has displaced nearly 2 million people and killed more than 13,000 so far.

That kind of response is what our school board and our schools have always done well, Chair Pat Daly said in a post on the board’s website.

“More than just relief, we pray that he sends a strong message of hope and support to our brothers and sisters in Ukraine during this time of tremendous conflict, uncertainty and need.”

The council is also encouraging schools to hold a “blue and yellow” civic day on March 10 or 11 as a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
