Johnson, the board’s current superintendent of education, was named to replace Deb Crawford at a special board meeting on Tuesday.

Crawford announced her retirement as director of education in March. Johnson officially takes over on October 1.

“I am a strong supporter of the Catholic school system and the communities of Chatham-Kent and Sarnia-Lambton,” Johnson said in a council video. “My faith has fueled a passion in me to ensure that our students see themselves as unique, loved by God, and created with great potential to contribute to our world.”

Johnson’s teaching career began in 1992 with the Halton Catholic District School Board. He joined the St. Clair Catholic Council in February 2005 as a high school teacher.

He became Deputy Principal of the former St. Christopher High School in 2008 and Principal of Holy Trinity Elementary School in 2011. He was appointed Superintendent of Education in 2015.

“I am excited about the future and I am confident that as we begin to emerge from this pandemic we will enter a new world of learning,” Johnson said. “I invite all stakeholders to join us as we envision a bright future and respond to the needs and opportunities that lie ahead. “

As a member of the board’s leadership team, Johnson has been instrumental in developing a wide range of programs including alternative education, high-risk co-op education, dual credit programs and school at a college, a press release from the council said. He also led a team of staff who created the Head Start program, which provides transition support to Grade 8 students before they enter high school.

He has helped develop partnerships with Lambton College, St. Clair College and Local 1089 of the International Union of Workers of North America (LiUNA).

“Scott knows our board of directors. He knows our staff, our students and our families, ”Board Chairman John Van Heck said in the video. “With his vast experience and knowledge and with the support of the senior team members, he is well positioned to lead the board into the future.”

Johnson has been a mentor and adjudicator for the Ontario Catholic Supervisory Officers’ Association’s Supervisory Officer Qualification Program. He is a past board member of the Sarnia Lambton Workforce Development Board and a committee member of the Sarnia Lambton Apprenticeship Network.

He is a member of the parish, Eucharistic pastor and usher of the Sacred Heart Parish of Sarnia.
