ROCKFORD – America’s favorite sandwich gets a special nod on Saturday.

September 18 is National Cheeseburger Day.

Here are a few places in Rockford to celebrate with a delicious burger on Saturday or any other day of the week.

A classic cheeseburger is a burger topped with American cheese and other traditional ingredients like lettuce, ketchup, mustard, pickles, onions, and mayonnaise.

Since the 19th century, different variations of the cheeseburger have been created like the double cheeseburger and the bacon cheeseburger, as well as countless versions of the traditional sandwich.

Local restaurants serve the classic cheeseburger, double cheeseburger and everything in between. Here’s where to find some of Rockford’s best and most creative cheeseburgers.

15th and Chris

At 201 3 p.m. Ave., 15th and Chris offers a wide variety of unique recipes like Harr E. Caray, a Cubs-inspired burger topped with the ingredients of a Chicago-style hot dog and American cheese. The menu also includes a bacon cheeseburger, sliders, and the Flamin ‘Jack, a favorite topped with pepper jack cheese and hot sauce.

Behr’s lair

The restaurant is nestled on the grounds of Behr Iron and Metal, 1125 Seminary St. It serves five burgers, including the “Behrger,” which has two burger patties that will keep you from going hungry for the rest of the day.

Baker Street Burgers

Baker Street Burgers, 1603 N. Alpine Road, serves a total of 10 burgers, including their signature Baker Street Cheeseburger and the All American Cheeseburger. Other creations include the Spicy Peanut Butter and Bacon Burger and the Chicharito Burger.

Buddy Burgers

Buddy's Burgers serves a Western burger.

Buddy’s menu is anchored by his One- and Two-Ox Buddy Burger, a classic cheeseburger that can be complemented with a range of toppings like steak sauce, sauerkraut, relish, jalapeños, green peppers with mushrooms. and more. Buddy’s is also known for its Nine Patty Hamburger Challenge. Take it if you dare. Buddy’s is at 6551 E. Riverside Blvd.

Beefaroo

The beef is on behalf of the six Rockford sites. There’s also plenty of it in every burger, including the quarter-pound cheeseburger. The menu also features a classic quarter pound burger, double bacon burger, and mushroom and Swiss burger.

The extensive burger menu at this retro drive-in at 725 Kent St. in Rockford includes a 1/3 pound cheeseburger that’s only meant for the biggest appetites. Zammuto’s also serves a double cheeseburger and a double bacon cheeseburger.

Vintage @ 501

Vintage pays homage to the classic cheeseburger with its Vintage Pub Burger, a 1/3 pound Black Angus chuck patty topped with American cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion. The downtown Rockford restaurant at 501 E. State St. is also known for its Million Dollar Bacon Cheeseburger, which is the Pub Burger topped with ham, bacon, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, and a tangy house sauce.

Abbreo

Abreo isn’t a burger restaurant, unless it’s Dive Bar Night at 515 E. State St. Every Wednesday, owner Paul Sletten and his company offer a different signature cheeseburger. Each is a special concoction like the Inside Out Burger – a rib eye burger stuffed with butterkase cheese, pickled chili peppers, smoked pork, avocado, aioli and cabbage.

Wammy’s kitchen

If you’re looking for a creative cheeseburger, Wammy’s Kitchen at 1222 S. Alpine Road might be the only stop you’ll make, especially after trying the Wammy Burger. It’s partly a cheeseburger and partly a mushroom burger with a slice of seafood. The Wammy is topped with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, two types of cheese, shrimp, sautéed mushrooms and onions.
